John Jr & Mary McLean Loose Three Sons to the Civil War

My great great grand parents, John Jr and Mary C McLean lost three sons to the Civil War.  Quincy A McLean, Julius H McLean and Marcus L McLean lost their three brothers; Joseph A, John Rodney and Ephraim T McLean.

Joseph, John and Ephraim all joined the North Carolina 7th Regiment Infantry Company I in 1862.

The above shows Joseph A McLean "mustering out"

This one shows him 'dyeing'

The above shows John Rodney 'mustering out', ie. dyeing.

This shows Ephraim dyeing.

This chart shows which battles the three McLean brothers fought in and takes a guess at where they were wounded or killed.

The above map shows the location of battles and hospitals.

After researching this Civil War history of my three great great uncles I realize that we are very fortunate to know as much as we do about these men.  In some battles, 90% of the dead were unknown.  At least we know when each enlisted and died and can surmise which battles they fought in.

Newell Dearnol McLean - My Uncle

Newell DeArnol 'De' McLean was born 7 Sep 1903 in San Dimas, Los Angles, California to Katie Emma (Griffin) McLean and Robert Baron McLean.

This is the proud Scotsman, my uncle De.  Named Newell for his mother's father, and where they got the name DeArnol is a mystery to us all.

DeArnol and Baron in ~1906

1910 Alhambra, CA home.  DeArnol, Baron, Lowell

1914 DeArnol, Baron, Lowell

1917 Chicago.  The Robert Baron McLean family - Katie, DeArnol, Baron, Lowell and Robert.

In about 1923 at Redlands University, Beatrice Dorthea Remington and Marion Josephine Jackson later to become wives of DeArnol and Baron.

1924 at University of Redlands, Bea and De.  They were engaged.

In 1930 a tour in the USMC for De and Lowell broke De's engagement with Bea.

By 1942 De and Bea were finally married.  Bea had married and had two daughters, her husband died in 1940.

In 1944 De was in the US Army - Army Corp of Engineers - built bridges in Europe.

This is De's adopted daughter Margaret Valerie (McLean) and husband Don Eikenberry.

This is De's other adopted daughter Marie Annette (McLean) who married Harvey Cleon McCorkill.

This is the Bea and De we all knew and loved.  A wonderful and happy couple that enjoyed every minute of life it seemed.  Their Christmas Letter was always the highlight of the season.

The Daniel McLean Line

Bob McLean (Robert MacRay McLean Jr) is the 9th generations of this line in America.

Bob McLean of Maryland

Bob is descended from Daniel McLean of Elk Shoals Creek, Iredell-Alexander County, North Carolina. His line goes like this:
  • Daniel McLean 1769-1829 & Sophia 1770-1845
  • Hugh McLean 1794-1850 & Sarah Cloer 1798-
  • Andrew Jackson McLean 1818-1907 & Margaret Ann Correll 1823-1882
  • Hugh Franklin McLean 1843-1916 & Nancy Caroline Harmon 1846-1918
  • David Baxter McLean 1869-1942 & Martha Caroline Crow 1870-1950
  • Charles Henry McLean 1891-1976 & Leah Mae Shoemaker 1892-1986
  • Ray Henry McLean 1914-2002 & Laura Vivian Church 1917-2002
  • Robert MacRay McLean Sr 1937 & Barbara Joyce Burkhardt 1940
  • Robert 'Bob' MacRay McLean Jr 1960

Y-DNA - Sorting the various branches of McLean's

We can use Y-DNA information to evaluate several branches of McLean's that were present in Iredell and Rowan Counties, North Carolina in the late 1700's and early 1800's.

Branches of these McLean's that we know something about are:

  • John McLean, Silversmith b1755 d1829, lived on Buffalo Shoals Creek, Iredell-Alexander Co, NC
  • John McLean Sr. b1755 d1817 , lived near the Yadkin River, Vashti, Iredell-Alexander Co, NC
  • John McLean, Planter b1746 d1818, lived on Buffalo Shoals Creek, Iredell-Alexander Co, NC
  • Daniel McLean, b1769 d1829 , lived on Elk Shoals Creek, Iredell-Alexander Co, NC
  • John McLean Jr b1789 Coddle Creek, Rowan Co, lived NW of Mooresville, Iredell Co, NC d1865
  • William McLean b~1794 d1863, lived on Coddle Creek, Rowan Co, NC

Y- DNA results are separated into Haplogroups - groups of people from a distinct branch of the human genetic tree.  FTDNA's (Family Tree DNA Co) lists 191 McLean's in their "Clan McLean" group.  These McLean's fall into one of ten Haplogroups:

  • A             African           1      1%
  • E1b          Semitic           5      3%
  • I1             Nordic            12    6%
  • I2a           Slavic              4      2%
  • I2b           Nordic            10    5%
  • J2             Semitic           12    6%
  • R1a          E. European   10    5%
  • R1b1        W. European  4      2%
  • R1b1b2    Celtic             112   59%
  • R1b1b2a   Niall              21    11%
  •
  • Total                               191  100%

If we group these into the main branches:

  • A       1                                   1%
  • E        5                                   3%
  • I         26                                14%
  • J        12                                 5%
  • R       147                               77%

So, the distribution of McLean Y-DNA is:

  • 77%      R haplogroup
  • 14%      I  haplogroup
  • 9%        Other haplogroups

Here is what we found out by testing Y-DNA from descendants of some of these McLean's:

  • John McLean, Silversmith - Descendant Gene McLean of Santa Barbara, CA - R1b1a2 Celtic
  • John McLean Sr - Vashti - Descendant Marvin A McLean of Oroville, CA - R1b12 Celtic
  • Daniel McLean of Elk Shoals Creek - Descendant Bob McLean of Maryland - I2b1a1 Nordic Isles-Scot
  • John McLean Jr of Mooresville - Descendant Bob McLean of Sonoma - I2b1a1 Nordic Isles-Scot
  • William McLean of Coddle Creek, Rowan Co - Stephen Wade McLean of SC - R1b1b2 Celtic
  • John McLean, Planter - no descendant found.

So the Silversmith, John McLean Sr of Vashit and William McLean of Coddle Creek, Rowan Co lines are from the dominant haplogroup R, and the Daniel and John McLean Jr lines are from the secondary haplogroup I.
